Dunedin ahead of curve in EV uptake

Dunedin continues to lead the charge in electric vehicle numbers.

There are 931 electric cars registered in Dunedin, part of the 21,829 registered nationally, Ministry of Transport statistics to August show.

At a meeting yesterday, the Dunedin City Council approved a licence to occupy for ChargeNet New Zealand to install, operate and maintain an electric vehicle fast charging station on council-owned land in Middlemarch.

The site will be next to Browns Rd near the intersection of State Highway87.

A report prepared for councillors said the council was regularly approached by private suppliers that wanted to install charging software on council land.

Staff were developing an electric vehicle charge infrastructure plan for the city, to assess charging infrastructure needs to the year 2030.

It would be used to guide council support of future electric vehicle charge infrastructure.

A University of Otago Centre for Sustainability study in April said Dunedin continued to have one of the highest rates of electric vehicle ownership in New Zealand.

Dunedin has about 6.1 vehicles per 1000 people, compared with an Otago regional average of 4.7 and a national average of 3.8 vehicles per 1000 people.

Comments

A few parts in a thousand. The variations therein are pretty much in the regime of noise.

I hope that our electric cars can reach Middlemarch. I hear of owners too afraid to drive to Dunedin airport and back. Best buy a hybrid, or as they are now advertised in the UK "Self Charging Vehicles".
