Luck ran out yesterday for a fugitive who had eluded capture for three weeks, when he was caught by police, bitten by a police dog and cut and grazed by gorse and undergrowth.

Casey Bowler-Moncur (44) was apprehended in a stream behind the former Roslyn Woollen Mills building in Kaikorai Valley Rd, Dunedin, at 5.40pm, after being spotted by an off-duty officer in Greenock St.

He had been on the run since July 21, when he failed to appear in the Dunedin District Court on burglary charges, and was wanted in relation to dozens of commercial burglaries across the South Island in the past two months.

He was last night charged with the robbery of the Westpac Gardens branch in North Rd, Dunedin, on July 14.

When he was seen about 4.30pm, police covered the area from Highgate to Brockville.

Senior Sergeant Craig Brown said Bowler-Moncur was apprehended by officers, including a police dog team, in what he called "a great team effort".

Police were "extremely grateful" for the public's assistance.

Bowler-Moncur came quietly, and was not armed.

On July 22, Bowler-Moncur escaped from the Motueka police station after being arrested in relation to several burglaries.

He was being treated as armed and dangerous after a gun went missing from a vehicle he allegedly stole near Motueka, and the public were warned not to approach him.

Snr Sgt Brown said Bowler-Moncur had been seen by a police doctor for a dog bite and for cuts and grazes.

He will appear in the Dunedin District Court today.
