Dunedin has its warmest June 22

It might not have felt like it, but Dunedin did reach its forecast temperature of 19degC yesterday, setting a record for a June 22 day in the city.

MetService meteorologist Claire Flynn said the high of 19degC was reached in the Octagon between 1pm and 2pm but temperatures then fell.

Both the MetService and the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research forecast the temperature for the yesterday, the shortest day of the year.

Other New Zealand cities also experienced unseasonably warm weather in the past couple of days.

The highest June temperature recorded in Dunedin was 20.4degC in 2003, MetService meteorologist Lisa Murray said on Monday.

The city had experienced other high temperatures this month; 18degC was recorded on June 9.

The previous June 22 record was 17.4degC in 1998.

Northwest winds accounted for the rise in temperature.
