Dunedin singers Jonathan Lemalu and Anna Leese have each been awarded a $10,000 grant.

The money was donated by art philanthropists Roderick and Gillian Deane at a ceremony at Government House, in Wellington, last night.

The couple were recognised for their substantial and sustained arts patronage and were given $20,000 by the Arts Foundation to distribute to artists or arts projects of their choice.

The Deanes doubled the fund and awarded $10,000 each to Lemalu, Leese, dancer Delia Mathews and the Tower New Zealand Youth Choir.

Lemalu said he was amazed by the the couple's generosity.

"For such respected members of New Zealand society, it is hard to believe they would take an interest in a young man from Dunedin who had nothing but a joy for singing," he said.

"They have become a huge part of my family life, and support and encourage me in all I do."
