A South Dunedin tobacco store has had been visited by police this week questioning if it is allowed to be open.

The owner of the Nickys tobacco shop at 531 Hillside Rd, Graham Murphie, said he believed he had been given consent by police to trade for the last six days.

But he said a "change of shift" led to a different response from police and he was now trying to find out his trading status.

Police were seen in the store on Wednesday.

Responding to questions sent to him on Thursday, Mr Murphie said he had been speaking with a senior Dunedin police officer who was "facilitating a review of our status".

Given that, Mr Murphie said he did not want to comment further until a decision was made.

The police have been approached for comment.
