Education college graduands awarded scholarships

Three University of Otago College of Education graduands at the college's Southland campus have received $500 scholarships for showing excellence in their teacher education programmes.

The awards, from the Community Trust of Southland, were made to Jenna Horrell, early childhood, Melissa Carney, primary, and Amanda Hinton, secondary.

The latest scholarship awards were announced by trust deputy chairwoman Trish Lindsay at an end-of-year event at college facilities in Invercargill last month.

Trust grants manager Dianne Williams said the annual awards to Otago college graduands had been made for at least the past 10 years.

The funding reflected the considerable efforts and sacrifices made by teachers during their training, given that many were adult students with family commitments.

The awards also took into account the "hugely important" role the teachers of tomorrow would play in society, Mrs Williams said.
