Cooking a family meal may seem like a simple task, but when that family has a new baby, or is coping with illness, getting dinner on the table becomes a struggle.

That is where Bellyful steps in.

The free national service, which provides home-cooked meals to families with newborns, or for those with sick children, or parents, was established in Franklin two years ago and is coming to Dunedin.

Area co-ordinator Becca Toschi said she saw Bellyful on the internet and thought it was a great idea.

She approached the national office and hoped to have the service running here next month.

"We have to find volunteers and we have to fundraise to buy all the cooking equipment. Once we've got that, we start cook-a-thons," Mrs Toschi said.

The meals - such as lasagne, macaroni cheese and spaghetti bolognese - would be cooked in bulk and frozen, ready for use, with three meals delivered at a time to recipients.

A public meeting would be held soon to "get the knowledge of what we do out there" and a fundraiser was planned for October 7.

Called "Be Beautiful", the event will be held at the Southern Cross Hotel and will feature an image consultant and make-up artist giving tips on looking, and feeling good.

Giveaways, silent auctions, raffles and goodie bags will be included.

Tickets are $28 and available by emailing becca.toschi@bellyful.org.nz
