Entries now open for TRYathlon

More than 200 children are expected to take part in the annual Plains Junior TRYathlon in Mosgiel on Friday.

Event co-ordinator Suzanne Watt said the TRYathlon was East Taieri School's annual fundraising event.

It was also aimed at encouraging children to ''get out there and give it a go.''

Entries were tracking at the usual levels and she expected more than 200 children to take part.

Registrations were also available on the day, she said.

The event was used to raise funds to provide buses to get East Taieri School pupils to and from swimming lessons in Mosgiel and Fairfield during the next near.

Children aged 5 to 14 will run up to 1km and cycle up to 2km around circuits on Mosgiel Memorial Park, before swimming up to 150m in the Mosgiel Pool.

There are individual and team categories in three age groups: 5-7 years; 8-10 years; and 11-14 years.

Mrs Watt said the event was timed so competitors could use it as a lead-in to the Weet-Bix TRYathlon in Mosgiel on March 1.

''It's a good warm up for the Weet-Bix. They can use it as a benchmark to see where their fitness levels are at.''

The TRYathlon, which will be held regardless of weather conditions, begins at 6pm and a barbecue will be held during the races to encourage family and friends to come and cheer on the competitors. Entry forms can be found on the East Taieri School website.
