Dunedin boy Simon Macknight (10) places pine cones in a "bug motel" at the Woodhaugh Gardens yesterday as part of the Making a Change Expo.

The structure, which was installed by student-led group Town Belt Kaitiaki, is meant to attract spiders, moths, caterpillars and other life.

Group education co-ordinator Claudia Babirat said its installation was as much about education as it was about attracting bugs.

The group was one of about 10 with stalls in the gardens as part of the family event, organised by the Department of Conservation.
