Farmers vow to keep fighting rates review

Taieri farmers unhappy with the Otago Regional Council's rating review of their district have pledged to continue fighting it.

The group of about 24 farmers have committed money to the fight and engaged a lawyer to look into avenues they should pursue.

The Taieri rating review was adopted by the regional council last month, bringing in a system under which the council says those who benefit most from the flood protection works and drainage systems pay the most.

For a small group of farmers this means rates increases in the tens of thousands of dollars, while for Mosgiel residents it means a reduction in their rates.

Group spokesman Ad Bekkers said its opposition to the review, which had included farmers driving their tractors through the city, came too late, but they believed that was because of a lack of information from the council.

"There is still discontent on the Taieri."

Legal advice had indicated they had few options to pursue except for asking for another review next year, he said.

"We're very, very disappointed. This has left us hanging."

However, the group had decided to fund a lawyer to look more closely at the council decision.

It also decided to be better prepared for next year's funding review so the same situation did not happen again.

"We are going to persevere. Next time, when the funding review comes up we'll be well prepared."
