Six of the festival’s artists performed at the festival hub Te Whare o Rukutia for the opening night.
Dunedin Fringe Trust co-director Kate Schrader said the opening party was a celebration of an amazing 11 days of creativity ahead.
The event featured Australian comic Nick Robertson, who performed a set previewing his show Leave To Enter which will be performed later in the festival.
This time last year, there were 2000 tickets sold.
"We’re so stoked with how it’s going.
"It’s clear the community really wants to get out and support these artists and really enjoy the amazing events that have come together for this year’s Fringe.
"We’re really thrilled for ourselves but especially for our artists, that people are buying tickets in advance," Ms Schrader said.
She said a number of shows had already sold out and it was a fantastic achievement for the artists, who were from all over Dunedin and abroad.
There was something for everyone to enjoy at the festival.
She encouraged people to pick up a programme and come and enjoy.
