Festival ticket sales best in its 10-year history

Demand is starting to outstrip supply for tickets to the 2010 Otago Festival of the Arts.

Festival organisers yesterday had to schedule an extra matinee performance of the political satire Le Sud to cope with audience demand.

"Monday night's performance has sold out and the other three nights are very close to doing the same," festival director Nicholas McBryde said yesterday.

"It's played to capacity audiences throughout the country and it doesn't surprise me that it's going to do the same in Dunedin.

"I think the concept of the South Island being a wealthy, French-speaking nation which starves the English-speaking North Island of electricity has a certain amount of fancy to it that appeals to the mainland sense of humour."

Mr McBryde said some performances for shows began selling out two weeks ago and that sales for the 2010 festival had been the best in its 10-year history.

The additional matinee performance of Le Sud will be held at 2pm next Sunday at the Settlers Theatre.

The Otago Festival of the Arts starts next Friday and runs till October 17.
