Flood alleviation work progressing in Henley

Flood protection improvements could make the Taieri settlement of Henley more resilient during heavy rain.

Residents have pushed for nine years for the Otago Regional Council to improve its flood protection, as it is one of the most heavily-hit areas when the Taieri River bursts its banks.

After acknowledged delays in upgrades, the council said in October 2019 said it would make improvements in the area.

Council engineering manager Michelle Mifflin said since then the council had completed the re-profiling of the floodbank and grassing was "coming along well’".

"The re-profiling involved restoring the shape and height of the floodbank. Grass is seeded on the floodbank for stability and to control against erosion.

"We are pleased to have completed this work before Christmas, as planned."

The council was also continuing work on an additional outlet to improve drainage, which it aimed to complete by early March, she said.

  • Otago’s online natural hazards database has been overhauled for easier use.

Council natural hazards manager Jean-Luc Payan said yesterday the online site, which gets up to 40,000 hits a month, was now a "simpler, clearer experience".

The database displays information on flooding, coastal hazards, alluvial fans, landslides and earthquakes on a map of the region.
