Gang members arrested over 'tit-for-tat' attacks

Two Mongrel Mob members were arrested last night and charged with intentional damage after what Dunedin police described as "tit for tat" gang attacks on vehicles yesterday.

In the first incident, police were called to King Edward St, South Dunedin, about 3.30pm after a witness reported seeing gang members, believed to be from Black Power, attack a car with an axe.

Sergeant Paul McLaughlan, of Dunedin, said a Mongrel Mob member had been collecting an associate from the Department of Corrections' South Dunedin service centre when their car was set upon and the windows smashed.

The driver and passenger were spoken to by police but did not wish to lay a complaint.

About 6.30pm, a vehicle belonging to a Black Power associate was attacked in Hilary St, Pine Hill.

Senior Sergeant Bruce Ross said a metal weapon was used to smash the windscreen.

Gang members chased the attackers down the street before the police arrived.

Two Mongrel Mob members were arrested later in the evening and were to appear in the Dunedin District Court today, he said.

No-one was injured during either incident, he said, describing them as "tit for tat retaliation".
