The Government has answered a plea from the Southern District Health Board for $7 million to help tackle its deficit.

Health Minister Tony Ryall issued a statement this morning announcing the cash injection.

"This money does not pay off the board's deficit. It is a one-off payment so the board can pay the day to day bills while they sort out their ongoing deficit."

The board asked for the money in May to cover the bulk of the old Otago board's expected $7.3 million deficit for this year.

The money was on top of the $7 million paid to Southland DHB before it merged with Otago to form Southern DHB.

The boards' combined deficit for the year is forecast to be $17.241 million, compared with the budgeted $15.234 million.
