Young folk today do not know how good they have it.

That was the assessment of teachers and pupils at Green Island School after they walked 10km from their school, along the route taken by pupils 156 years ago, to the site of the first Green Island School, which was established on Green Island Bush Rd in 1853.

The school's 75 pupils, made the journey yesterday as part of Walk 'n' Wheel to School Week.

Principal Steve Hayward said pupils in the 1800s hiked to the old school house from as far away as Saddle Hill and Caversham with lanterns because the journey took so long.

It was dark when they left for school and dark when they got home.

It was a sobering thought for those making the journey yesterday, he said.
