A search and rescue operation was launched on the Otago Harbour yesterday when a person reported seeing something that looked like a hat and possible person in the water.

Search efforts started about 1.40pm at Company Bay and continued up to Broad Bay. Five boats - three inflatable rescue boats, the harbourmaster and the coastguard - were on the water.

A police spokeswoman said nothing out of the ordinary had been located and search efforts concluded about 3.30pm.

Our journalists are your neighbours

We are the South's eyes and ears in crucial council meetings, at court hearings, on the sidelines of sporting events and on the frontline of breaking news.

As our region faces uncharted waters in the wake of a global pandemic, Otago Daily Times continues to bring you local stories that matter.

We employ local journalists and photographers to tell your stories, as other outlets cut local coverage in favour of stories told out of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
