Health and welfare groups top list of community trust grants

Health and welfare organisations have been the major beneficiaries in the latest round of Community Trust of Otago funding, which totals $857,400.

Eight such organisations received $445,000 from the trust, which released its April grants list this week, benefiting 26 organisations in Otago.

Of the health and welfare organisations listed, $150,000 went to Presbyterian Support Services, which will employ a social worker for Central Otago and continue running its YouthGrow, Buddy Programme, and Maybank day-care projects.

Anglican Family Care received $60,000, Methodist Mission $55,000, Salvation Army $45,000, Otago Youth Wellness Trust $40,000, Catholic Social Services $35,000, Malcam Charitable Trust $35,000, and Barnados Otago $25,000.

Trust chief executive officer Keith Ellwood said funding was also allocated to organisations running community projects, including the Old Cromwell Town restoration project, for which Old Cromwell Inc received $200,000.

Other large grants included $100,000 for the Otago Medical Research Foundation to conduct biomedical, clinical and public health research, and $30,000 given to the Skeggs Foundation to put towardsthe cost of sport coaches.

-Taieri Tennis Club, $25,000; Dunedin Opera Inc, $15,000; Dunedin Astronomical Society, $9000; CSS Disability Action Waitaki Inc, $8000; Clutha Agricultural Development Board Positively Clutha, $5000; Karitane School, $4000; Alexandra Rugby Football Club, $3500; Deaf Association of New Zealand Inc, $3500; Strath Taieri Historical Society Inc, $3500; Maheno Every Boys Rally, $2000; Waitaki Rotary Club, $1500; Purakaunui Amenities Society, $1000; Rural Women New Zealand Upper Waitaki Branch, $600; Mosgiel Ballet Competitions Society, $500; Dunedin Poultry, Pigeon and Cage Bird Club, $300.
