All non-essential and elective dental services at University of Otago Faculty of Dentistry clinics, including those provided at the Dunedin Dental School, are being cancelled.
The decision was made following advice from the Ministry of Health and the Dental Council of New Zealand, and is aimed at reducing the risk of community spread of Covid-19.
Faculty of dentistry dean Prof Mike Morgan said only emergency treatment and relief of pain services would be provided at this stage.
"Emergency treatment is defined as including oral-facial trauma, significant infection, prolonged bleeding, or pain which cannot be managed by medications.
"Given the current uncertainty, appointments will not be rescheduled until normal services can be resumed."
