Contractors at the site of the new Dunedin hospital inpatient building work on a steel reinforcing cage that goes into the ground as part of the piling process. A Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora spokesman said they were drilling piles for the tower crane bases ahead of the crane installation next month. The rig bores a deep hole, the steel reinforcement mesh is lowered in, and then the pile is filled with concrete. Each tower crane needs three or four of these piles, and there will be three cranes in total.
