Hi, lily! Long time no see

The sweet-smelling cream and purple trumpet flowers on the towering lilies have taken their time to put on a spectacular show in Mosgiel.

Eunice Morrison (72) planted the Cardiocrinum giganteum lily five years ago, when she moved to Mosgiel after retiring from farming in Clinton.

The lily bloomed for the first time 10 days ago and the cream flower with purple inside was highly perfumed, she said.

The lily was nearly 3m tall and thrived in the cool and shaded area of the garden.

The elevated flowers were exposed to the elements but she believed the blooms would hang around.

''Hopefully for a few days more, but the wind is giving it blazes now.''
