Mosgiel has a reputation for being a couple of degrees warmer than Dunedin, but now Reid Park Kindergarten children are attempting to grow its reputation as one of the sunniest towns in New Zealand.
They are among thousands of kindergarten children throughout New Zealand participating in the Daltons Sunflowers in Kindy project.
The children have planted the Kings Seeds Sky Scraper variety of sunflower, which can grow up to 5m high and produce flowers with faces 45cm in diameter.
Reid Park Kindergarten head teacher Julia Cormack said for some of the children, it was the first time they had ever grown anything, and excitement was growing among them.
''We thought it would be a great learning programme for the children.
''And we're hoping to bring a bit more sunshine to Mosgiel,'' she said.
Final measurements will be submitted on December 3 and there will be the chance to win a range of prizes.
