How will 3000 sheep cross the road?

A Brighton farmer and the Dunedin City Council have devised a plan to help get the farmer's flock safely across the road.

At a Saddle Hill Community Board meeting in September, farmer Ross McLeary told board members he asked the council to investigate a safer way for him to get up to 3000 sheep across Scroggs Hill Rd.

Council transport delivery manager Josh von Pein said a plan was devised between the two parties to be used when sheep were crossing the road. The plan included the installation of temporary traffic management measures, such as advance warning signs and an agreed procedure including the best time of day and conditions for safely moving stock.

The measures followed on from ''successful safety improvements'' last year to a nearby corner on Scroggs Hill Rd.

The improvements included ''modifying the camber and widening the shoulder'', Mr von Pein said.
