A hunter has been rescued from the Silver Peaks Scenic Reserve after becoming "distressed" this morning, police say.

A police spokeswoman said the man entered the rugged hill country to the north-west of Dunedin yesterday and activated his emergency locator beacon at 10.48am today.

The Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter picked up the man by 11.30am, she said.

A Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand spokeswoman said the hunter was lost at the back of the reserve.

Police or the centre did not know if he was injured.
