Industrial fire in Birch St easily extinguished by Fenz

Fire crews battle a small blaze in an air filter at an industrial premises in Dunedin's wharf area yesterday morning.

Two appliances were deployed from Dunedin Central and St Kilda fire stations, along with a ladder truck from Dunedin Central, about 9.20am, to reports of a fire at a metal fabrication business in Birch St, near Steamer Basin.

A reporter at the scene said firefighters wearing breathing apparatus spent several minutes trying to extinguish the small fire, which appeared to be in an industrial air filter and was generating large plumes of smoke.

Workers at the business were evacuated from the building as fire crews established a cordon.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokeswoman Lyn Crosson said firefighters arrived to find the air filter system for a plasma cutter ablaze, but they did not encounter too much trouble putting it out.

Crews left the scene by 11am.
