Injured driver cut from stock car at Beachlands

An injured driver was taken to Dunedin Hospital after being cut from his stock car at a Dunedin speedway last night.

Beachlands Speedway spokesman Mark Newall said a visiting driver was competing in a heat race for the New Zealand Street Stock title in Waldronville when the street stock car he was driving crashed with another stock car.

"Two vehicles came together in an unusual manner . . . there was no malice or attacking involved, it was simply, he happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and another car collided with him."

The injury to the man's shoulder was not life-threatening, he said.

A Fire Service southern communications spokeswoman said firefighters from Lookout Point Station were called about 9.30pm to cut open the roll cage of the stock car so ambulance staff could remove the driver.

A St John spokeswoman said the driver had minor injuries and was taken to Dunedin Hospital by ambulance.
