Kiwi settling into home

They are keeping up their air of mystery but the kiwi at Orokonui Ecosanctuary are believed to be settling in well.

Eight Haast tokoeka were released into the predator-proof enclosure about a month ago as part of a programme to increase genetic diversity and provide a back-up population for the rare kiwi.

Otago Natural History Trust chairman Neville Peat said ecosanctuary staff were monitoring the kiwi weekly and all were "present and correct".

While they had not been seen or heard much, evidence had shown they were spreading out, some going more than 100m from the purpose-built burrows where they were released.

At least five had moved into the upper part of the ecosanctuary.

Department of Conservation kiwi team leader Neil Freer said the Orokonui team was doing a very good job and monitoring of the kiwi had shown they were doing well.
