Campus development division director David Perry said it entailed replacing the existing paving, to address the deteriorating slip resistant surface, in what was a highly pedestrianised area between The Link, the Central Library and the Castle Theatre Complex.
It also entailed replacing the lighting and bollards to enhance safety, adding a wooden deck and seats to one end of the grass area, and adding plants.
The work was scheduled to finish in February 2021, before students arrived back at the university.
He said Isaac Construction was doing the work, but declined to say how much the project cost citing commercial sensitivity.
