The organisers of the Great Easter Bunny Hunt, the Alexandra Lions Club, set their sights on the annual TrustPower Central Otago district community awards and were announced the supreme winner last night.

The club marked the 20th anniversary of the event this year and 47 teams took part, killing 22,904 rabbits in 24 hours, allowing the club to this year donate $10,000 to the Alexandra St John building fund and $750 to the Alexandra Scout Group.

As well as winning the sport and leisure category of the annual community awards, the club gained the right to represent the district at the awards national final in the Ashburton district in March 2012.

TrustPower community relations officer Melanie Tavendale said 23 voluntary groups and organisations were nominated for this year's Central Otago awards.

"This event is on top of the Lions' usual projects. They haven't told us much about their other activities this year, but their name popped up in a number of other groups' forms, showing just how much they are doing for the Central Otago community."

The winner of the heritage and environment category was the Making a Difference for Central Otago group. The group was a branch of the Sustainable Living Programme and was the driving force behind many community initiatives, including events tied in with World Environment Week.

The Millers Flat Water Company Ltd won the health and wellbeing category, for setting up a water scheme to serve the Millers Flat community.

For its efforts in promoting the performing and visual arts in the Vincent Community Board district, the Alexandra Community Arts Council won the arts and culture award.

The Maniototo Kindergarten Establishment committee took top honours in the education and child youth development section. The 17-strong committee has raised almost $50,000 towards setting up a kindergarten in the area.
