St John ambulance workers help an 82-year-old man out of his car after a head-on crash in Dunedin yesterday evening. The man had to be cut from his vehicle after the accident on Shore St.

The crash happened just after 6pm. It appeared the car driven by the man had crossed the centre line and crashed into a car driven by a woman heading towards Musselburgh Rise, Sergeant Nathan White said.

A St John spokesman said the man had moderate to minor injuries and was conscious when taken to hospital.

Sgt White said it was not known what caused the crash, but conditions were wet at the time.

There also appeared to be a spill of an "oil-type substance" at the opposite end of the road, which police would look into as a possible cause.

The woman driving the other car was also taken to hospital as a precaution.
