A Dunedin man who died after falling from his wheelchair on the Otago Peninsula has been described as a man who lived life to the full.
He received serious head injuries in the December 12 accident, and died in Dunedin Hospital on Sunday.
The 46-year-old was heading home on the Portobello Rd walking track, near Rose Hill Rd, when he lost control of his wheelchair about 10pm.
The wheelchair had been adapted into a battery-powered trike, which left the track at speed and crashed into the sea wall.
He had been in the intensive care unit at Dunedin Hospital since the accident.
The circumstances of his death were still under investigation, and the incident would be referred to the coroner.
A family member said he became a paraplegic following a car accident when he was 19 years old.
"He lived life to the full, and as sad as his family is that he has passed away, he passed away doing something he loved.
"He loved that new adaption to his wheelchair. It gave him adrenaline and freedom."
Other family members gave tributes yesterday, saying "We know you will now be running free," and "A limb has fallen from the family tree, who will be sadly missed".
A funeral service will be held at Hope and Sons at 12.30pm today.
