Man injured in car incident

Dunedin police are seeking witnesses to an altercation behind an inner-city restaurant in which a 20-year-old man was allegedly run over by a car.

Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken said the man and a 16-year-old male had been arguing in Albion Lane behind McDonald's about 2.30am on Sunday.

The fight ended when the 16-year-old got in his car and tried to drive off.

Snr Sgt Aitken said the 20-year-old ended up on the bonnet of the car before sliding off and having his leg run over.

"Whether he jumped on the bonnet or he's been hit by the car, we don't know yet."

No charges had been laid and police were calling for witnesses to come forward, he said.

The 20-year-old was taken to Dunedin Hospital with an ankle injury. It was fortunate the incident did not have more serious consequences, Snr Sgt Aitken said.

"We don't want people getting run over and ending up with potentially serious injuries."
