An elderly man is in a serious but stable condition at Dunedin Hospital tonight after being run over by a ride-on lawnmower in the Dunedin suburb of Fairfield.

A police spokeswoman said police were called to the property on Old Brighton Rd just after 4pm today.

A St John spokeswoman said the man was taken to Dunedin Hospital by St John ambulance in a critical condition.

The man was run over by a tractor or a ride-on lawnmower, the police spokeswoman said.

A reporter at the scene said it appeared it was a ride-on lawnmower.

Two police cars were at the property and an ambulance left with its lights on at 4.45pm.
