Covid-19 restrictions did not stop more than 3000 people from flocking to the Otago Farmers Market on Saturday.

Market organisers said it was the busiest weekend since Alert Level 2 restrictions were reintroduced.

Market assistant manager Michele Driscoll said people were taking a responsible approach to maintaining social distancing, and complying with contact-tracing requirements.

"Everyone has been well behaved and respectful [about social distancing requirements]," she said.

Under Alert Level 2, events at public facilities must display an NZ Covid Tracer QR code.

They must also manage numbers to ensure each individual or group of people is kept 1m apart.

Attendance at the market was well up on the previous weekend when cold conditions reduced numbers, and people had enjoyed live music from Valley Bluegrass.

Visitors flowed steadily throughout the morning, and although takeaway coffee and hot food was available, no seating was provided.

People simply bought what they wanted and moved on.

Market volunteers were on call in case numbers grew too high to be easily managed, but were not needed.

It was good for people’s physical and mental health to be outdoors, meeting people and making connections, including friendly links with vendors, she said.

"It’s great. Fresh air makes a big difference."

Market board adviser and former trustee Pat Johnston said the event was "positive" for mental health and community spirit.

"People seem to be in good spirits.

"It has an uplifting vibe."
