Creating a 20- to 30-year strategic plan is the next step for Sara Cohen School's board of trustees on the pathway to redevelopment.
Principal Raewyn Alexander would like the special education school's dilapidated buildings to be demolished and rebuilt to meet education standards.
However, the Caversham, Dunedin school had been unable to secure funding.
Ministry of Education special education southern region acting manager Murray Roberts, district manager Patrick Crowley and Dunedin office manager Kathryn Palmer met Mrs Alexander, board chairman Shelley Hill and support people yesterday to discuss a way forward.
Mrs Alexander described the meeting as "very positive".
The board had been given the task of creating a 20- to 30-year strategic plan.
The ministry "certainly knew something has to happen" and the onus was now on the board of trustees to "develop their vision and strategic plan", she said.
That would be discussed at the next board meeting later this month.
The school community would be asked to give its views on the future of the school.
Another meeting would be held with the ministry in March, Mrs Alexander said.
