Looking at her gold-prize-winning model at ModelCon22 in Dunedin yesterday is Aspen Purdom (14), of Rangiora.

The show took place in the Hutton Theatre at the Otago Museum.

The model was made using a kit based on the Japanese anime film Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.

Aspen said it was one of the films she watched with her father, who had also travelled down for the show.

It was not her favourite film, but she loved anime and it was hard to find kitsets for newer shows and films.

The model took upwards of 30 hours to complete. The tree was made using a twig from her garden, and the terrain was made using tiny gravel she painted.

She had been making models for about three years and was working on a horror-style project with her father at present.

Although many figures in the show were based on real-life vehicles, she preferred the fantasy-style models, she said.
