Kings High School has received another "half dozen" applications for its principal's job, after the board of trustees extended the closing deadline for applications.

Initial applications closed on July 4, with six people putting their name forward.

The board had hoped to appoint a new principal by the end of last month, when former principal Colin Donald finished to take up a position as a principal's adviser in the United Arab Emirates.

But board chairman Geoff Rodden said it had concerns about the time potential applicants had to apply for the position.

The July 4 cut-off date for the initial applications may not have given all potential applicants time to apply, he said.

Applications were reopened, and closed again on Monday this week.

"It did what we hoped it would. We've had about another half dozen apply. We're certainly pleased with the response."

By nearly doubling the number of candidates, Mr Rodden said the selection process would not be made any easier.

"But it will give us the feeling that, somewhere in there, we've got a reasonable chance of getting what we want."

The board still hoped a new principal could be appointed and start in term four, although an appointment could be as late as next year.

The school's deputy principal, Daryl Shields, is the acting principal.
