Musicians introduce pupils to orchestral instruments

Getting young people to enjoy orchestral music these days may seem like an impossible mission.

But it was the movie theme from Mission Impossible that instantly caught the attention of Balmacewen Intermediate pupils yesterday when a small group of musicians from the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra performed for them.

The orchestra members are touring schools around the Otago region this week as part of an outreach programme aimed at introducing pupils to music and orchestral instruments.

All four sections of the orchestra (strings, woodwind, brass and percussion) were represented, playing some well-known and some not so familiar pieces.

A DSO spokesman said it was beneficial for young people to see that modern music could be played live and on instruments that many associate with only the classical repertoire.

It was also great for pupils to experience the unique atmosphere of a live performance.
