New paintings for library

Taieri views have grown by two in the Mosgiel Library after a donation of artworks.

The Taieri Community Arts Council donated a canvas print of Dunedin artist Jane McLeod's Otago Hunt at Hindon and former Green Island artist Heather Maxwell's Saddle Hill from Blackhead Road.

The prints add to a collection of artworks worth more than $3 million, which are on display in the Dunedin City Council's libraries.

Mosgiel librarian Linda Roxburgh was delighted with the new additions.

"It's wonderful to have works by people who have been part of our community. We're very lucky. It's nice to walk in here - the artworks create a colourful atmosphere - they give the library such a Taieri feel."

Mrs McLeod, a member of the Taieri Community Arts Council, was on hand to help hang the two artworks during a public unveiling at the library last week.

Her painting shows a panoramic view of Saddle Hill, with riders of the Otago Hunt in the foreground - an event established on the Taieri in 1883.

Mrs McLeod said the painting captured a moment in the Taieri's history, and it was a privilege to have it on display in her local library.

"The people in the painting are all local people - they recognise themselves in the painting.

"This is immortalising people in our community."
