Norovirus seems to be slowing

The numbers of patients at Dunedin Hospital contracting the contagious norovirus appear to have slowed, with one more falling ill today and one last night.

Twenty patients across 10 wards appeared to have contracted norovirus in a new outbreak of the virus in the past couple of days.

However, the total number of patients with the virus currently in Dunedin Hospital had fallen to 10, from 18 yesterday.

A further three staff had also fallen ill with vomiting and diarrhoea since 8am, District Health Board spokeswoman Gail Goodger said.

The original outbreak three weeks ago affected more than 170 staff and patients and prompted a lockdown at the hospital with a ban on visitors.

Visiting patients throughout the hospital is currently limited to 2pm to 8pm.

The hospital had been working vigorously to contain the illness, including changing the air conditioning from recirculating air to bringing in fresh air.

All scheduled patients that had been ill with vomiting and/or diarrhoea, or had had contact with people with those symptoms, were asked to stay away.
