Freedom campers will have to wait until next week to use Dunedin's new inner-city camping site.

The Dunedin City Council's trail freedom camping site in Thomas Burns St was planned to be ready for its first campers from today.

Council parks and recreation manager Robert West said the site would now open on Monday to give the council time to complete the sealing and line marking work there.

Leased car park holders also still needed to be notified where their new parks were, Mr West said.

The trial site will be open to freedom campers from Monday 8am until April 30.

Today is the start of the official freedom camping season when security contractors would start increase their patrols of popular freedom camping sites around the city.
