About 30 aspiring orchestral players attended the ``Play with the Orchestra'' event hosted by the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra.

Dunedin Symphony Orchestra general manager Philippa Harris said the group played pieces from Mozart's Jupiter and Sibelius' Finlandia.

Novice players ranged from high school pupils to ``more mature'' players, she said.

It was an important event for the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra.

``You can't sit in an ivory tower.

``We are publicly funded and it is fantastic to share the enjoyment of music with everyone.''
