A run-in with security, a lack of sleep and a fair amount of frustration did not stop a team of Dunedin students from crossing Europe using only energy drinks as currency.
Tish McNicol and brother and sister Finn and Chessie Henry represented the University of Otago as the only New Zealand team chosen to take part in the ''Red Bull Can You Make It?'' competition.
After a sometimes gruelling seven-day journey, starting from London on April 4, the team made it to the final checkpoint in Berlin by the cut-off time of Saturday morning (New Zealand time).
The team was not placed in the competition, made up of 100 teams, but scored highly in some categories, including fourth place in ''number of cans earned''.
Ms Henry said in an email the best thing about the ''life-changing'' trip was the ''generosity and unexpected kindness'' of the people who gave them a hand.
''It was genuinely mind-blowing to be at the receiving end of so much,'' she said.
They recorded some of their trials and tribulations on the competition's website, including a run-in with security while crossing a highway bridge on foot and sleeping in a park in Berlin.
Their reward for making it to the final checkpoint was being put up in a five-star hotel, a three-course dinner and a surprise trip to a rooftop nightclub in Berlin.
