Peninsula meetings on possum eradication

Response to a proposal to eradicate possums from Otago Peninsula has been mostly positive in a survey as a series of meetings on the topic are held for residents.

The Otago Peninsula Biodiversity Group is proposing a planned approach to possum control in an effort to protect the area's biodiversity values.

Towards a Pest-Free Peninsula project manager Rhys Miller said about 230 of the about 2000 surveys sent out to peninsula residents had so far been returned most - about 92% - showing support for the project and an interest in getting involved.

A series of public meetings was also being held to help inform the community.

The meetings enabled people to ask questions of the project team and Otago Regional Services staff, who had knowledge of pest control programmes and could field queries about toxicity and environmental impact.

Meetings were still to be held at 7pm at Hoopers Inlet tonight, Macandrew Bay tomorrow, and Pukehiki Hall on Thursday.

Another meeting would be held at Harwood on March 24.
