Yesterday, people gathered at the Alhambra-Union Rugby Football Club in North Dunedin for Laps for Life, with the goal of collectively completing 365km in support of mental health — the distance figure representing new opportunities every day of the year.
Life Matters senior peer support and event organiser Anna Harris said the number of people who turned out to the event showed the depth of care in the city.
"It’s so great to reach this goal with the help of the community," she said.
"Seeing people out here today, it shows that people really care."
Each lap of the rugby field measured about 400m.
Participants reached their collective goal within the first four hours of six allocated.
About 65 groups signed up — about 200 people in all — to put in laps in support of the cause in this year’s second edition of the event.
Participants were encouraged to wear yellow and bring their biggest smile.
"It’s a day to move your body, connect with others, and support mental health awareness and suicide prevention," Ms Harris said.
On the day, people of all ages, from all walks of life — families, friends and people who wanted to put their long-distance running to the test — could be seen walking, running, jogging and enjoying their time together.
"Every lap helps break down stigma and shows support for those who need it," Ms Harris said.
"It's OK to not be OK and it's OK to ask for help."
