A Christchurch man allegedly rammed a police car in a stolen vehicle during a pursuit in Dunedin at the weekend.

Senior Sergeant Craig Dinnissen, of Dunedin, said the 25-year-old male was arrested after midnight yesterday.

He was charged with reckless driving, unlawful taking and unlicensed driving.

The man allegedly stole a car from Roslyn Fresh Choice and police found him swerving over the road on Saturday night.

He attempted to evade police and drove 70khm in a 50kmh zone.

Police pursued the driver into Ravensbourne, but he became trapped at a dead end in Adderley Tce.

He unsuccessfully tried to escape which involved him backing into a police vehicle.

The man was then arrested.

He appeared in the Dunedin District Court today.
