It's been a busy start to the new year, with police calling Dunedin "crime central".
Sergeant Steve Aitken, of Dunedin, said police are investigating a home invasion in the city.
Two men wearing balaclavas broke into a house in Beechworth St, Northeast Valley, about 4.15am today threatening an occupant and making demands before taking a paintball gun but leaving it as they left.
Police did not know if the pair were known to any of the occupants of the house. Inquiries are continuing.
Meanwhile, an 18-year-old has been charged with failing to stop, reckless driving and excess breath alcohol after a police pursuit about 2.30am today.
The driver was seen speeding on Portsmouth Dr and Begg St before officers located him in the car.
He was allegedly driving with a breath-alcohol level of 206mcg - there is a zero breath alcohol limit for drivers under the age of 20.
The man will appear in Dunedin District Court on January 12.
Tourists lose passports
The car of Australian tourists parked at a private house in Cannington Rd in Maori Hill was illegally entered between 3am and 3.15am this morning, police said.
A backpack was stolen and it contents included $AUD3000 cash and passports. The tourists had flights booked to return to Australia today.
Another vehicle was illegally entered and searched in the same street this morning.
Police said about 20 cars were illegally entered in the past week. Many were parked in recreational carparks including Sullivan's Dam, Sandymount Blackhead and Tunnel Beach.
Sgt Aitken encouraged tourists parking in a recreational area to take a photo of other cars in the area to help police inquiries if vehicle was illegally entered, as the offender's car might be there.
If possible, tourists should take valuables with them when visiting attractions, he said.
A pair of new cycle shoes with the receipt were stolen from a workshop in Willowbank between December 31 and January 5. The shoes were returned to the shop where they were purchased this week and exchanged for cash. The investigation is continuing.
Tools and hay bales taken
A building contractor's tools worth about $5000 including a drill, nail gun, jigsaw, screw gun, jack hammer were stolen from a locked house in Centre Rd, Ocean Grove, between December 23 and January 5.
Ten bales of hay were stolen from woolsheds in Slopedown and Clinton between December 18 and January 5.
Meanwhile, someone attempted to illegally enter George Street Normal School in Dunedin between December 18 and January 5. A reinforced glass window in a door was smashed but the school was not entered.
