Police tell students: lockup

Police have issued a reminder to students in Dunedin to make sure their flats are secure over the holiday period.

Senior Sergeant Bruce Ross said that as students packed up and left town, thieves took the opportunity to target vacant flats, where tenants often left their belongings while they were on holiday.

He reminded students they should do everything to make sure flats were secure, and if they could not secure flats they should contact their landlords, who were responsible for the security of their properties.

Police had received several reports of burglaries in the student area of North Dunedin recently.
