Policewoman injured during arrest

A policewoman was allegedly attacked by a woman she was arresting in Tomahawk Rd in Dunedin yesterday.

The constable was putting handcuffs on the woman while arresting her on an unrelated matter about 10.30am, when the woman attacked her, Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken said.

The officer was cut on the hand with the handcuffs.

She managed to call for urgent assistance during the struggle.

At least six patrol cars responded, although one was stood down after being damaged when it hit a kerb near Bayfield High School.

The woman was detained by another officer who arrived at the scene shortly after.

She appeared in the Dunedin District Court yesterday afternoon.

Snr Sgt Aitken said the officer was shaken by the incident.

• A 44-year-old woman, facing charges of breaching a restraining order and resisting a constable, was refused bail and remanded in custody to Friday when brought before the Dunedin District Court yesterday.

She was granted interim name suppression.

• Police are investigating a sudden death at a Laing St house in the Dunedin suburb of Caversham yesterday.

Further information would be released today, police said.
