Polystyrene not for bins

Polystyrene should not be put in Dunedin recycling bins, but it can be taken to a Mitre 10 Mega store for recycling.

And the Dunedin City Council is to set up a collection point at the Green Island landfill.

The material is used by insulation manufacturer Expol, which has a plant in Cromwell.

A service began this year whereby Dunedin residents can return their used polystyrene to Mitre 10 Mega in Andersons Bay Rd and the material is collected at Green Island and then sent by truck to Cromwell for recycling.

The city council said last week a separate container would soon be set up at the landfill to allow Dunedin residents to take their polystyrene there.

The council encouraged people to use the Mitre 10 Mega drop-off in the meantime, as well as issuing a reminder no polystyrene should be put into the city’s yellow kerbside recycling bins.

At a council infrastructure services committee meeting last month, Cr Jim O’Malley said it was pleasing the insulation product would be contained within buildings, rather than allowing plastics, and microplastics, to get out into the environment.

Expol is the largest manufacturer and distributor of polystyrene products in New Zealand.

Mitre 10 Cromwell and Mitre 10 Mega Queenstown also accept polystyrene for recycling.
